Lymph Nodes and Lymphatic Drainage of the Colon

The AiA rendering shows the lymphatic drainage of the colon. The lymph nodes are named according to arteries with which they travel.  Thus there is the ileocolic group (1) right colic (2), middle colic (3) left colic (7), sigmoid (8), superior rectal (9), middle rectal (11), and inferior rectal (12).  These nodes drain into the regional halfway houses for the nodes including the SMA, IMA and iliac groups.  The paracolic lymphatics  are located along the marginal artery (4) and the prececal and retrocecal are seen in relation to the cecum.

Artistically the multicolored globular and tubular colon is seen in contrast to its delicate lymphatic drainage.  The art piece also provides a balanced portrayal of art and anatomy with shapes that include an overall quadrangular shape of the colon combined with the curved haustra, and the linear shape of the arteries and the nodular shape of the lymphatics.

Philosophically it underlies  the importance of a protective system that polices our internal society of the body- an essential function of any city or community. Transport systems in the form of tubes are relevant to all communities.

The art is suitable for an office that has a focus on the gastrointestinal tract or a company that promotes medications for the ailments of the colon which are very common.
