Description
The AiA rendering shows normal acini in royal blue and abnormal emphysematous acini in pinks and purples. The enlargement of the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles is due to loss of elasticity caused by smoking. This lack of elasticity is also seen in the skin of smokers reulting in the characteristic premature wrinkling of the skin. The lack of involvement of the terminal bronchiole is characteristic of centrilobular emphysema.
