“The Witch Doctor, Gallbladder, and Uterus” depicts the symbolism of two similarly pear shaped structures in the body.

The Zulu witch doctor known as the Sangoma is central to the image.  He is wearing a headdress that is topped by a number of gallbladders of goats.  The gallbladder (left) and uterus (right) have common symbolism in this culture.

One of the beliefs is that the similarly shaped organs are both receivers and givers of life. The symbolism of the gallbladder in the headdress typifies the mission of the Sangoma
