Description
The AiA rendering of the most distal portion of the colon was derived from a barium enema that uses X-ray technology. The rectum has characteristic shape is relatively straight and has 3 curved folds. The top fold defines the border between the first inlet part of the rectum above and the ampulla below. The inlet portion is narrow, widens at the ampulla and then narrows at the anorectal junction. The rectal columns and pectinate line which are near the anorectal junction.
Physiologically the spacious repository provides space for the storage of content until it is opportune to evacuate. The sphincters in the rectum act as controlled valves . The rectum has an unusual sensory ability to distinguish between gaseous and solid content.
Artistically the rotund and tubular shape with the crescentic folds has semblances of early stone art. The color pink provides a delicate quality.
