Description
“Small Nucleus, Health – Big Nucleus, Cancer” shows the a normal nucleus associated with a “thumbs up” reflecting health, and “thumbs down” reflecting disease. The normal sized nucleus allows the organelles in the cytoplasm to be themselves and develop to full potential. On the other hand the large nucleus compresses and stifles the members of the society residing in the cytoplasm. In the left hand image the organelles are visible and in the cancerous cell (right) the large nucleus with too much power infiltrates the cytoplasm and stifles the organelles.
Cancer reflects either an innate genetic aberrance and/or an exposure to an environmental carcinogenic substance.
The nucleus is central to activities of the cell (images). Morphologically the structural feature that is characteristic of cancerous cells is an “increase in the nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio”. This means that the nucleus is too big and the cytoplasm relatively scant.
Artistically surrealism and spherism are used to provide the idea of good and bad. In this case smaller is better and the normally sized nucleus allows space for the society of the cytoplasm to thrive and grow. This nucleus serves as master and servant to the cell. The large cancerous nucleus retains invasive power inhibiting true freedom of expression of the individuals of the society of the cytoplasm who eventually will die prematurely.
