Penis, Testes, and Reproductive Cells in an Ice Pond

The testes are in the bottom right hand corner filled with reproductive cells (sperm).  At the appropriate time during ejaculation they take a trip via the vas deferentia.  The vasa deferentia are depicted as tubular structures travelling from the testes to the base of the penis down the prostatic urethra where they collect the prostatic secretion. The sperm then travel down the urethra and out into the female genital tract.  The race is on, as the 40 million to 1.2 billion cells of a single ejaculation are released.  They all seek to win the hand of the queen – and only one will fuse in victorious ecstasy with the ovum de jour.  This is just the way the human reproductive system works.  The bonding creates a new life and this story is the miracle.

The formation of ice crystals require special winter conditions. In this case, micro-air bubbles create the appearance of flagellated cells in an ice pond.  Freezing cold and water are basic ingredients. Temperature and humidity determine crystalline forms.

This AiA rendering is a photograph taken in the ice ponds of a local park as they started to thaw after a major storm, followed by minus degrees of bitter cold, and subsequently followed by 40 degree weather.  The shapes that manifest in this instance were a penis, scrotum and small microbubbles of sperm.  T

On the day I photographed the image, the conditions were ripe. A  “bad” snowstorm in February 2016 with 8-12 inches of snow, was followed by a Valentines day of zero degrees Fahrenheit, and then followed a day later by a morning with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Fahrenheit.  Ice ponds with transparent and often cracked thin ice could be found all over the park  As I looked more closely at these ice ponds with my macro lens – my breath was taken away by the geometric forms of nature.

Just a click of the camera and a moment of time in nature, likely never to surface again, was captured.
