The major structures in the brain that are involved in the sleep cycle and dreams include the RAS reticular activating system, thalamus, cerebral cortex, including the cingulate cortex, limbic system, amygdala hippocampus, parahippocampus, and pontine tegmentum.
The art piece shows a brain floating in the night sky and highlights some of the major structures that are involved with sleep and dreams.
Artistically the moon and the orange thalamus, are similar in shape and color. The thalamus is central to the sleep cycle.
