Description

The top panel may reflect laminar flow in any of the tubular structures in the body or outside the body. The almost parallel lines of flow are characteristic of flow in the smaller tubes.  The bottom panel shows turbulent flow that may occur when flow encounters a narrowing in the tube and eddy currents evolve. In the ascending aorta, flow is mostly laminar, but when the aortic valve is stenotic, turbulent flow results and the clinicians identifies a variety of murmurs with a stethoscope.  The murmurs that result from narrowing of the aortic valve are very different to these that occur with mitral valve stenosis for example.

Under resting conditions, laminar flow exists from the medium-sized bronchi onward down to the bronchioles. During exercise, the air flow is accelerated, and laminar flow may be confined only to the very small airways.

Artistically there is tension between the upper panel of harmonious movement with the bottom panel which is chaotic.
