Description
The adrenal glands (suprarenal glands) have two major functional parts. The outer cortex and the inner medulla. The cortex has three major layers. The zona glomerulosa is the outermost layer and is responsible for aldosterone production. The middle layer is the zona fascicularis and is responsible for cortisol production. The innermost layer of the cortex is the zona reticularis and is responsible for weak production of sex hormones. The medulla of the adrenal gland lies centrally and is responsible for the production of catecholamines. This art piece shows the complexity of function in a structure that looks like a delicious dessert with berries at the base and custard on the top.
