To My Dear Heart…

To my dear Heart,

heart0001-catalogue-signed-500-72dpi

Of all my children that I have grown up with

And who have been part of me for my life

All of whom I owe deep gratitude

For Life itself

For thinking, seeing, doing, loving, and crying

For making sure that my water is OK

That poisons do not run amok in me

Ridding me of my waste

Supporting me

Protecting me

Allowing me to dance

And to sing

To run

To play ball

Allowing me to grow

Allowing me to give birth to new beings

How do I say this without being unfair to them

Yet enabling my deep feeling of admiration and passion for you to be revealed

I have to single you out as my favorite

You have the asymmetric symmetry that makes you so interesting and intriguing

You have the male power in your left ventricle

And the female power of receptivity, compassion, and logical sense of modulation in your right ventricle

You have rhythm

You have grace

You have romance and tenacity

You have simplicity

Combined with uncanny complexity

Anatomy of the Caribbean Heavens

The heavens are rich with artistry  creativity, and lessons to teach us

When viewed from a ship at sea they are even richer – and vacation provides the time and opportunity to explore and express this beauty.  The art is biased of course by the perspective of the observer.  AiA finds the shapes and character of “things” related to the body, biology, art and culture of primary interest.  The Caribbean heavens explored from a boat contains  a wealth of material.

As we started our journey….

I swear I saw  Prometheus running down from the heavens !

body, sky, heavens,clouds, athlete, running

and then I looked a little closer …

body, sky, heavens,clouds, athlete, running

and then put on my shades… and yes twas  a powerful athlete running down to earth from the skies and he was carrying something!  body, sky, heavens, clouds, athlete, running

Prometheus is a Greek mythological figure who brought fire to the earth that he stole from Mount Olympus.  He was punished by Zeus who chained him to the rocks of Mount Caucasus.  In addition an eagle (Zeus himself) punished Prometheus by daily feeds on his liver.  The ancients knew of the magical regenerative properties of the liver and the antiseptic qualities of bile.  The eagle (Zeus) is later slain by Heracles and Prometheus is given his freedom.  He gains strength due the the regenerative powers of the liver (also known by contemporary physicians in the world of hepatology and hepatic surgery).

Talking of animals of the sky?  And what about the Scottie dog?  What lessons does he have to teach us?

body, sky, heavens, clouds, dog, Scottie, shape, running

Scottie of the Skye in the Sky

In this image a Scottie dog was found romping in the heavens.  The Scottie is an endearing name for the Scottish terrier – aka Aberdeen terrier.  It is part of the group of Skye terriers and therefore is fittingly suited for the theme of the wonderful sightings in the sky.   The Scottie is one of the terrier breeds that come from Scotland.  Other terriers in this group include the Skye, West Highland Terrier, Dandie Dinmont and the Cairn .  The Scottie has a characteristic compact and powerful body.  The torso and head are rectangular, ears are pointed , eyes are almond shaped, and the beard has  long and soft hair.  The legs are short but powerful allowing for agility and quick movement. The breed exemplifies “power in a small package” . The confident and independent nature has earned them the nickname “Diehard”.  It is extremely territorial.  Both President Franklin D Roosevelt and George W Bush owned Scotties. George, the fourth Earl of Dumbarton owned a pack of brave Scottish Terriers, that were named “Diehards”.  Dumbartons regiment in the The Royal Scots were fittingly named the “Dumbarton Diehards”  Scotty Cramp is a disease in Scottish Terriers that causes muscle spasms resulting in hyperflexion and hyperextension of the legs. It is an inherited recessive trait of the breed.  It is  caused by a deficiency in serotonin.

In Radiology we look at the neck of the Scottie dog in a condition of the lumbar spine that causes back pain in athletes called spondylolysis.  The neck of the Scottie is overlaid in maroon in the image on  the right and represents the pars interarticularis which may undergo stress fracture in young athletes (spondylolysis) resulting in one lumbar vertebral body slipping forward on the other (spondylolisthesis).  It is one of the causes of back pain in young athletes.

Rain – Good or Bad? –

sky, heavens,clouds, rain, sun, sky

“Anatomy of Rain in the Sky at Sunrise”

In this image sunrise brings a shower of rain in the east.  The sun shining through the dark clouds illuminates other clouds and brings some hope.  In the context of the vacationer the rain is a disappointment and means an undesirable day indoors.   For the farmer and for mother earth it is a blessing!

The art piece is dominated by falling rain and a rising sun that shines through and illuminates the vista.

and what does that teach us – It all depends on context

Some quotes:

Predicting rain doesn’t count. Building arks does.  Warren Buffett

Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.  Langston Hughes

In this instance the gray skies of rain bring a gloom for some and yes … also a bloom .. of life for others.  It is an essential to all biology.

Some Quotes

The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

And the following day – all had changed – the rain had passed and bright orange heavens illuminated the sky a moment before sunrise

The artist spotted Chagall flying in typical fashion through the heavens of the Caribbean.  he had his arms outstretched as if to bless the sky

And by the end of the first day… the clouds rolled in to compete for kingdom of the earthly sky

sun, sky, clouds, sunset

Anatomy of the Sky as the Sun Starts to Set

The kingdom of the earthly sky is shared by the sun with the clouds as each seeks to dominate.  For the sun this is a small battle since its kingdom stretches over the entire solar system.  For the clouds this is a major battle since they only rule over the earth.  They both play an essential role in preserving life on earth.  The sun is constant and dependable.  The clouds are transient and fickle. The setting sun descends through the blanket of the clouds, and gives the sky a mysterious, and magical  feel.

And the next day… the clouds and the sun shared the spotlight at sunrise

I took a nice cuppa tea, and sat on a chaise – longue to watch the spectacle.  To my surprise I saw my knee caps…

Sunrise View of the Knee Caps

The art piece expresses a joint experience of my knees and the sun. As I sit on the chaise-longue sipping tea and watching the sunrise with X-ray vision, I share a gaze with the sun.  The sun looks at the sunrise view of my knees and I look at its sunrise in the sky.  In radiology we use the ‘sunrise view” to evaluate the joint space between the patella and the femur.

As the day progressed the clouds disappeared, and a day moon appeared.

And nighttime came – not a cloud in the sky … blackness descended revealing the light of a crescent moon and its neighbour  Venus.

and the heavens turned black – and I saw the overshadowed crescent moon talking to Venus… “What are people thinking?- Do they not realise life rules over death? Peace over terror? Why do the leaders of the people not declare this universal truth? It is so clear from where we stand, that there is something going wrong down there….Leaders must not remain silent! “

And after the moon rose my hand rose to tell the moon something…

I Have a Bone to Pick with You .. I said

In this art piece the larger than life bones of the hand reach out into the sky in conversation. Tongue in cheek it wants to share the idea that it has a bone in its wrist that shares a common feature with the moon.  The lunate bone is is found in the  proximal row of metacarpal bones in the wrist, so named because of its shape. “Luna” is the Latin name for the moon.

and then two more hands with their scaphoids appeared to teach us the last lessons from the Caribbean

heavens-0023-catalogue-signed

Scaphoids That Pass Under the Lunar Night

The art piece shows a night time sky with the X-ray of three hands.  The hand on the left and right side of the image have the scaphoid bone of the wrist outlined in color.  The scaphoid is so named because of its ship like shape. “Skaphos” means  ship in Greek.  The middle hand dominates the trio of hands and unrealistically dominates the skyline.  The lunate bone is highlighted in the middle hand.  It is so named because it is moon shaped.   Artistically the scaphoid bone on the right is colored in Irish green since the ring finger carries a claddagh ring -an Irish ring that represents love, loyalty, and friendship.  The larger than life delicate  fingers of the middle hand reach out to the moon and  talks with the moon about their common shapes… small talk in the big picture

From a literary point of view the title “Scaphoids that Pass Under the Lunar Night” infers and  invokes the sentiment of Longfellow in “Tales of a Wayside Inn” about the “ships that pass in the night”

“Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing,
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness;
So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another,
Only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence.”

“Ships that pass in the night” speaks of chance meetings that are transitory that come and go and are just part of life that do not result  in a meaningful relationship – and in other contexts of two people who almost encounter each other – but do not.  In both cases, with a little effort of either party, a connection may have been life changing.

… and  these were just a few lessons taught by the Caribbean sky!

Anatomy of My Mind for the New Year

head, face, nose, mouth, lips, bones, skull, x-ray, radiology

“A Better Future?”

X-rays are used to projects things of the mind and  feelings that go deep into the bones.  The X-ray of the front of the head looks upward and forward to the future.  This art piece was  created for the New Year of  2016 with a hope of deep introspection for  each thoughtful person to improve themselves and the world.   As the year 2015 has now come to a close, we all hope for a better future.  This is not going to be a passive inheritance from thin air.  It will require deep introspection and reflection.   The art piece shows the head of a person, taking the first step to self realisation and fulfilment – raising the question.  The need for a thorough mental review of the past and the future is an absolute necessity.  The importance of playing an active role in personal destiny is emphasised by asking the first question – ‘A Better Future? ?” implying – How do I do I get involved with my own destiny and the destiny of my family and the people close to me?  The  X-ray is used to project a feeling that goes deep into the bones.  The X-ray of the front of the head looks upward and forward to the future.

The New Year fills the mind with all sorts of thoughts and feelings about oneself and the world.  It is a time to take stock of the state of the union of the self!  There is always room for growth and improvement.

Deep reflection and introspection is needed in order to accomplish this growth.  Life is a struggle and a wrestle for all at multiple levels.  There are physical, emotional, psychological, mental and spiritual aspects.  Each person must deal with their own failures and successes.  Sometimes what seems or seemed like a failure is in fact a success.

Life is a struggle and a wrestle for all at multiple levels.  There are physical, emotional, psychological, mental and spiritual aspects.  Each person must deal with their own failures and successes.

Who am I, what am I, and who do I want to be?

Perhaps the wisest advice I received was from an egoistic professor of surgery who suggested that one should project oneself to the age of 80 and then look back and see if one accomplished what one really wanted to accomplish.  Was it money, power, or personal fame or did it have to do with fulfilling relationships?  Are there things of the body that I should have or could have done?  Are there things of the mind that I could have or should have done?  Are  there things of the soul that I could have or should have done?

head, bones, skull, X-ray, radiology, introspection, nose, chin

The First Reflection for the New Year

In this art piece, X-rays are used to project a feeling that goes deep into the bones.  The  X-ray on the right shows a forward gaze of a person with well defined facial features. The image on the left is modified to show a blank reflection.  The art shows the head of a person, looking in the mirror at the end of the year and wondering about the past and the future.  The first  reflection is blank since the experience of  the past year and the future are difficult to grasp in that short moment.  Nothing more than the blank is expected .  Persistence and honesty with a continued effort is needed to progress beyond this point. The stare into the mirror should be more than momentary.

This art piece was also created for the new year of  2016 with a hope of deep introspection of each thoughtful person to improve themselves and the world.

head-0005-catalogue-signed

“What Do I Need?”

X-rays are used to project a deep and honest questioning as to what is really needed .  The X-ray of the right head looks upward and forward to the future. The response of excessive material wealth for show is the response in this instance  One has to decide if this dream is directed toward self fulfillment.  Showing off the prize in the hope of an egotistical victory in competition with others in the community is the passion of this person.

On second thoughts-  What do I really need?

Improving my body

head, mind, bones, protection, food, physiology

Absolutes of Life

As the year 2015 has now come to a close,, a deep search is needed – right down to the core to preserve life.    Survival is the first requirement. Protection, food, and water are absolutes.  Protection means a roof and walls to keep the threatening elements out.  Food and water means nutrition and fluid to maintain bodily function

The art piece shows the head of a person, pursuing the most basic needs.  The pursuit and acquisition of basic needs is the first step.  Although this is logical to all and everybody, the new generation forget that the first step to independence, is physical independence that requires an ability to support the most basic needs of life.  It is a lesson to communities and countries who owe this basic need to their people.  It is also a lesson to individuals who pursue personal happiness as they enter”real life” after they have been educated.   The home is a simple rustic log cabin heated by a fire.

Improving My Mind  –  Where do I start?

brain-0028-catalogue-signed

“Anatomy of Brain Function; Receive, Process, Produce, Export”

shows the bare skeleton of the human brain function.  The brain receives, processes, and exports.  The complexity of these three basic functions will unfold not only in the brain but in all functional systems.  The style is reminiscent of surrealism . The complexity of brain function is reduced to its 3 major functions.

So a good place to start is to a focus on the sensory system and it so happens that Janus of January has a lesson to share!

head, brain, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, sight, hearing taste, touch, smell, X-ray, Janus

Janus in Touch with His Senses

Janus is the God of beginnings and transitions and the art piece emphasises the organs of his senses.  He is usually depicted with two heads, one facing forward to the future and the other back to the past. The month of January takes its name from the Roman god.  As we face the new year, respect for the miracle of our senses needs to be celebrated.  In line with our resolutions of the optimizing the body, taking full advantage of our senses to optimise our mind is a natural progression.  The sensory organs keep us in touch with all that is around us, and it behoves us to use these miraculous tools  to feed our mind.  The art piece shows the sensory organs including, the eyes (sight), ears (hearing), nose (smell), mouth (taste), nose (smell), and hands (touch).

This art piece asks you to …see when you look, listen when you hear, taste when you eat….feel when you touch..

As the year 2015 has come to a close, we all hope for a better future.  This is not going to be a passive inheritance from thin air.  It will require deep introspection and reflection of real and meaningful needs.    X-rays are used to project a deep and honest questioning as to what is really needed .  The X-ray of the left head of Janus looks upward and forward to the future with senses perked. The right head of Janus looks back with senses heightened in similar fashion.

So a good place to start is an intense focus on the basics

Absolutes of food, water, and a home ….before the pie in sky

Use the senses sensibly – See when you look, listen when you hear, taste when you eat, remember to smell….and feel when you touch..

Art, Hand Movement, And Season’s Lights

Christmas, lights, Channukah, menorah, nativity scene,

The Nativity Scene, Menorah and Surrounding Lights with still hands

Winter brings a dark chill.  Humans respond to this discomfort by creating ways to alleviate the stress. This post focuses on one way to counter the gloom.  Across the Judeo-Christian world, light is used to brighten and warm the spirits.

Art in Anatomy found a family home in Westwood, Massachusetts who illuminated their home and garden with Judeo-Christian scenes.  They combined a nativity scene with a Chanukah menorah among colorful lights that adorned their house, trees, and barn.

By sleight of hand, Davidoff altered this scene by moving the camera in various directions to create different effects:

A Single Slow Back and Forth Sweep of the hands on the camera

The lesson: The same scene can be viewed from many perspectives.  Similarly, the same God can be viewed by many different religions.  The difference between the monotheistic religions is merely a difference in pathway; they all arrive at the same end point.  Why kill each other if we’re all headed to the same final destination?

Anatomy of the Hands in December

Anatomy of the Hands in Black and White of December

The hands have a story to tell of December! Here in the Northern hemisphere, winter has started to set in and it brings a sense of doom, darkness, and cold.

In its naked form, the doom translates into two opposing colors in their extreme: black and white. Nights are long and days are frequently adorned with the white of snow.  The vista is bleak.

seasonal-0003-catalogue-signed

“Colors of Winter”

is a minimalist portrayal of the season.  The black reflects the long dark nights and the white reflects the snow.  Artistic portrayal of the season is in its most basic form.  Black has many attributes, and in this context, reflects loneliness, quiet, mystery, but also intimidation.  The absence of light prevents us from seeing things, and the inability to see things makes us nervous.  At its most extreme it reflects death.  On the other hand, black is a color of authority and power.  Night is the end of the day, but as soon as light appears, a new day awakens.  White also has many characteristics and is the confluence of all color, resulting in no color at all.  At its best it signifies purity.  On a cold winter morning after a snowfall there is a white silence as if the world is asleep.

winter, black, white, night, snow, time,

“Reality of Black and White in Winter”

Spring colors are long gone.  The greens of summer and the yellows of fall have disappeared. Skeletons of the large deciduous trees stand naked in the cold.

We have lived with the bleak and cold winters for centuries.  As a result, we have devised ways to counter this barren vista. Using our heads and hands, we have learned to bring light, color, and warmth to December.

Festivals of light have been created through both ancient and modern cultures including  Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Bodhi day, Malh festival, Mōdraniht, Saturnalia, Sol Invictus, Yule, Yolda, Sadeh, and Chahar Shanbeh Suri.  Universal among these cultural celebrations is the need to bring joy, warmth, and light to offset the dark’s gloom.

Hands play a large part in the December season.  In a literal sense, they reach out to friends and family, light candles and fires, and extend uplifting gestures by providing food, gifts, and hugs.  In a spiritual way, they extend in hope and prayer.

This post tells the story of the hands in December in symbolic and abstract ways by combining photography, radiology, and painting.

In this extreme rendering of the middle of a cold winter night, the heavens are black and the earth is white with snow.  Only the stars of the heaven provide glimpses of warmth and light.

Cold Hands Looking for Light and Warmth

shows x-rays of cold, skeletal hands in the adverse conditions of freezing winter among naked branches, in a field of snow. The nighttime scene with a full moon adds a mysterious and eerie ambience.  The art piece expresses a desperation of a group of people when they are suffering and searching for light and warmth.  The open hands are chilled to the bone, pleading for special empathy.  The moon provides neither warmth nor light, but offers a glimmer of hope, however small.  The X-rays are used to strip the flesh down to the bones and the common suffering of a community is rendered real and deeply palpable.  This piece has a surreal character, since the x-rays are taken out of context and placed into snow white fields.  The hands have been brought together to look like a tree.

The limited warmth and light provided by the moon is temporary. Since the cycle of time brings a new day and new vista, there is an honored promise for a new beginning, accompanied by the sun which is brighter and warmer than the moon.

Cold Hands – Warmth and Light with Tincture of Time

shows x-rays of the skeleton of hands warmed by the light and heat of sunrise. The hands greet the sun with open arms. In this early morning scene, the whole tree of hands lays open like a flower to the newfound warmth.  The piece expresses relief after an arduous night, and a promise by the light of the moon of better things to come.

Giving Hands in the Snow”

shows x-rays of hands in the adverse conditions of the cold winter among naked branches of the trees, in a field of snow.  With the warmth of the sun, the hands are bold enough to face the winter. The foreground (recent past) is shaded and dark while the future is bright, light, and blue. The hands are chilled to the bone but their upward and upright position reflect strength, a “high 5”, a wave, or a handshake.  As the hands assume boldness, light emerges and projects into the future.

During the cold month of December hands also reach out to others.

hands, charity, bones, light, candle, charity, giving, receiving

You Get What You Give

shows hands that give and receive.  This gesture relates to moral justice. There is a balance in our actions.  This balance is not always evident nor provided in material currency.  The teacher receives this satisfaction from a look in the eye of a student who suddenly understands. The policeman or fireman receives the same grateful look that words cannot replace. It is given and received in love and compassion and is the essence of bonding. This feeling occurs between both people and animals.  The art piece shows “giving” hands and “receiving” hands.  The receiving hands are tipped to both receive and to give in the continuing cycle.  The X-rays are used to strip the flesh down to the bones and make the charity tangible.  The candle is the light and warmth that results from the the interaction of giving and receiving.  The message is particularly poignant in the winter season when we are driven indoors in dark, cold and often lonely days.  We need the light and the bonds to help us survive the dark days.

Festivals of light including Chanukah and Christmas are festivals when light and human bonds are needed and are abundant.

hands, light, warmth, candles, lighting, Chanukah

“Hand Lighting Chanukah Candles”

shows a hand warmed by the light and heat created with the lighting of the Chanukah candles. The nighttime scene adds an ambience of spirituality.  The art piece expresses hope of enlightenment for the world.  In the candle lighting ritual, the primary candle is called the Shamash and it is lit first, and is then used to light the others starting from left to right.  Shamash was also the Sun God in Mesopotamiathe god of justice in Babylonia and Assyria and shemesh means sun in Hebrew.  All of these historical associations involve the casting of light and warmth, both physical and spiritual.  The candles are based in a simple chanukiah of stone and clay.

“Birth of Jesus – Welcoming Hands ”

Christmas is the season of welcoming the birth of Jesus Christ to the world.  As the progenitor of the Christian faith he brought and continues to bring tolerance, compassion, and respect for life to the world.  Artistic portrayal of the event shows welcoming hands of the future Christian world.  Darkness for many was illuminated by the event. In this art piece, the bright moon (almost as bright as any sun) lights up the black of the night.  The star of Bethlehem has a mysterious and unique blue hue directing the 3 kings or wise men to the event.  Black and white are used liberally in this work.  Though opposites in many ways, they also compliment and need each other to reflect the contrast of moods.

Acknowledgement:  The central component of “Birth of Jesus – Welcoming Hands” depicting Jesus and Mary was adapted from the public domain work of  Gerard van Honthorst  (1592-1656) entitled “Adoration of the Shepherds.”

Diverse Hands of Spirituality

shows hands progressing to a bonding position in prayer and contemplation.  At the pinnacle, a light is created and reflects on the water.  X-rays are used to project a feeling that goes deep into the bones.  The colors express our outside differences, but we are all made of the same flesh and bones.  A triangle with the apex reflects a direction and an upward focus to a heightened physical and spiritual  position.  This art piece is created for Christmas 2015 with a hope of mutual respect among all faiths.

During this season there should be time for contemplation.

“Cold Hands Warmed by Fireside Chat”

shows x-rays of skeletal hands warmed by the light and heat of the fire. This piece expresses relief after a trudge through the cold snowy night to find light and warmth.  The hands hold the warm fire at a distance but seem tender in the way they cherish the comfort and the fire, freeing the body from physical discomfort and allowing time for introspection.

And as a world … what do we see?

The  year of 2015 has turned humanity on its head, particularly concerning is the rise of extreme Muslim ideologies in which belief and faith are placed above human life.  The rise of antisemitism is palpable.  The immorality of double standards where political and economical bias reigns above the truth is shameful.

The next art piece is an appeal to our leaders to talk and put life and truth above all.

Bones of Many Hands Speaking to Each Other

“How can we hold each other rather than kill each other?”
they asked.
“We all seem to be made of the same stuff” they said as they looked inside themselves.

The AiA rendering is a collection of the diagnostic X-rays of many hands of people of various ages, in various positions of giving and taking and in health and disease.  The hand with the watch epitomizes the concept of time.  Cultural aspects are also suggested.  The hand with a wedding band provides a sense of trust and faith and the hand with the Claddagh ring represents love loyalty and friendship. The hands are oriented to give the sense that they are communicating with each other.

Since December also brings in the New Year, it is time to try and make changes for a brighter 2016.  We cannot predict, but we can hope:

hand, hands, hope, peace, body language,

“Hands of Hope for a Better New Year”

shows hands held together with hope, warmed by the dim light and heat of the moonlight.  2015 was not an easy year and created a heavy heart for many who witnessed and experienced senseless killing. The nighttime scene lends a sense of spirituality but also of uncertainty.  The piece above shows hands scarred by the year’s events.  They are held not in prayer but in a gentle pose that reflects hope for the New Year of 2016. We hope that sanity and not hatred rules.  We pray for leadership that is free from double standards, and that is committed to common decency.

Hope is passive; the initiation of action should be a simple first step. The honest handshake between trusting partners is the least we should expect.

 hands, handshake, trust, bond

The Handshake

Let us agree that the right to live is above all other rights!

Hermit of the Abdomen – Dedication to The Pancreas

The Hermit of the Abdomen – History of the Anatomy of the Pancreas

O’ Dear Pancreas

You have been called the hermit of the abdomen
By whom I do not know
But in your dark and hidden way, you have
Spoken without a word
From the gurgling depths of the abdomen
Yes – you have earned this lonely title
and a coin should be tossed
to the person who coined the phrase
But it took a long time to understand who this hermit was – and what he was doing in the darkness of the abdomen

Can You see the Zebra-like  Pancreas in the Dark of the Abdomen?

From the day of antiquity
You have been looked upon by many
Herophilus, the father of anatomy had the first incisive insights into you
As he was one of the very few who had the guts to explore the guts in open fashion

Sanzio_01_Plato_Aristotle wikib

Aristotle (384 BC -322 BC)

(extracted from a painting by Raphael)

Aristotle at the same time seemed to have known something about you
but then you lay unharmed and unexplored for almost 500 years
Until Rufus mistook you for a piece of meat –
You must have laughed at the “pan kreas” thing
How wrong he was – you evasive little trickster

And then the Talmud – always seeming to be right
thought you were the finger of the liver –
little did they know how independent you were

While Vesalius was up to your “hide and seek” game

Vesalius_Portrait_pg_xii_-_c wikib

Vesalius (1514-1564)

the magical eyes of da Vinci missed you completely
even though he saw the serpiginous splenic artery snake right above you

The Serpiginous Splenic Artery Above the Pancreas

(da Vinci – 1452-1519)

The splenic artery which lies above the pancreas was described by da Vinci

but by the time the dissection took place the pancreas had autolysed and therefore was not seen by the genius da Vinci.

Your ducts seemed to have intrigued the next generation Wharton Wirsung and de Graaf
as you sustained the pain of the quill penetrating your inner gut
(I forget you were already dead but it must of hurt just watching!)
A little later it was that man called Vater and the little Italian Santorini who found your minor duct and your nipple
And so by this time we had a good understanding of you in your nakedness
but of course, as said – you were dead

And so young Bernard explored your factories, and got a sense of your canine workings,
But you were able to hold on to your sweet secret for just a little longer
until the Langerhans found the family jewels in the famous 2% of your population-
The islets – those beautiful eyelits – governess of all things sweet in the body

InsulinIHC

Islets of Langerhans

(Paul Langerhans 1847-1888)

Eberle, Bernard, Danilevsky, and Kuhne joined up across the world to expose your antacid and enigmatic enzymatic brew
And once again your wonderful workings for a better world were exposed –
and we knew then, that you were the quiet and effective type –
a hermit who did good
but did not want the limelight

To see you as you lived and breathed in the flesh
was the mission of Wilhelm the X-Ray man
who crusaded the path to visualise 40,000 Angstroms under the skin
And then there was a slew of heroes who learned to slew your sickened parts – including the famous Whipple who was able to Whipple you in an inimitable way

And then a bone guy – for God’s sakes – a bone guy! – called Banting and his student Best
exposed the insular chemistry of you insulin that had given you the power over the sweet
Never mind – in the end it was for the good of all –
And a new era was borne

Best and Banting

And with the advent of ultrasound, CT, MRI, and endoscopy

You came out and were a hermit no more

pancreas-0022-catalogue-signed

Coming Out Party in the Abdomen for the Pancreas

And so we try to understand your form as our scans explore you as you live and breathe
and we stare in awe at your odd shape – why oh why did you choose that shape?
What are you supposed to look like? – we have no clue
And we are happy – so happy for you that you are well nourished by a double blood supply

Blood-supply-of-the-pancreas

Blood Supply of the Pancreas

And we wonder why you have no skin – we thought all the organs had a skin
except for your tail – almost a foreskin
And you are off axis on two planes – what is that all about? – kinda crooked
And your twin origins and the intimacy with the duodenum, of the ventral twin
And the strange fusion of the Wirsung guy excluding the little Italian Santorini
It seems to me that your matrimonial fusion with Wirsung and the bile duct has led to more problems than the merger was worth
It does not seem in the long run, to have been a marriage made in heaven
What was that all about? Is there a grand plan to come

And so we try to understand your diseases
And in some way we understand that the guy glugging down the bottle
Could be punished by your reaction
But why Oh why are you so nasty to those whose misfortune it is to have stones roll down and get no satisfaction.. down the green vile bile route
Have you not learned to live with the green secretion by now
And did you not know that by reacting the way you do, that you are cutting off your nose to spite you head?

While type 2 seems remote from you
We don’t know about this Type 1 business
Why are you made to suffer so much at the hands of your own body on your own body
We feel sorry for you – to have your own buddies reject you – must be awful
And then to see so many young ones suffer because you don’t work
We once again see and understand what power you control from that deep dark hermit home of yours

And the cancer thing … so silently it creeps on you causing your collagen to counter
Only making things worse as it strangles nerve, blood vessel, and your spouse duct – the green one, – without regard

And then I think of you in your prime and in your happiness
When you are with your two buddies – the splenic vein and the renal vein
And you all look so much alike, and happy swimming in that deep ocean where you hide
And I wish this was forever

Bonds and Thanksgiving

Bonds and Thanksgiving

From Big Bang to Turkey Dinner

Ashley Davidoff MD Copyright 2015

Where do bonds start? and Where do they end?

It all started with big bang – and the need for bonds was created…

big-bang-0001-catalogue-small sign

…energies both positive and negative were released.

big-bang-0002-catalogue-small sign

They were called electrons and protons and…

…immediately they had a need to bond and become whole in the context of space and time.

big-bang-0006-catalogue-small sign

Their bond was deep and they created the mother of elements: hydrogen.  The electron remained true to his nature and the proton to hers. Their bond was not absolute as they danced around each other and caused young hydrogen to spin as well.

As a result of this beautiful bond, hydrogen has been spinning for billions of years.

big-bang-0008-catalogue-small sign

Hydrogen did not feel complete and had a need to bond and become whole. One of these bonds was with another hydrogen and an oxygen to form water – H2O – beautiful water.

The molecule had a need to bond and become whole and oceans and rivers reigned the earth.

133742p

Other the atoms also had a need to bond and become whole and they became molecules.

The molecules had a need to bond and become whole and they eventually became cells.

cells-0001-catalogue-signed

The cells had a need to bond and become whole and they became structures in the body.

The structures of the body had a need to bond and become whole and they bonded through blood vessels lymphatics nerves and connective tissue.

lungs-0018catalogue-signed-small

The Pulmonary Circulation

The water and chemicals that arose from big bang were needed to run through the vessels and bond the parts to let them grow and evolve.

02504pb05.8s

The two people of different energy, one called female and the other male, had a need to bond and become whole.

They maintained their individuality but became bigger and stronger than the component parts.

101714pb02.8.3k.8

So it was with their cells, one male and the other female. Each had a need to bond and become whole.

The progeny of these bonds had a need to bond and become whole. We call this group a family.

55280

This need to bond and become whole never ends as we continuously try to come together as people, and as a result we looked for the freedom to do this.

And we landed on the shores of America and became the Unites States.

Flag_of_the_United_States

We give thanks for this great United States.

It is not always smooth sailing, however, and bonds are broken with small bangs along the way,

Orel43

and then repaired with conversation and the meeting of reasonable minds (we hope)!

In the end, our MISSION and NEED is to search and struggle for wholeness. We are driven by a constant need to come together as one.

Thanksgiving is a time when we achieve meaningful bonds, albeit for a short time. That time is precious!!!

Anatomy of Circadian Rhythms in the Body

Anatomy of Circadian Rhythms in the Body

Ashley Davidoff MD Copyright 2015

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

Ecclesiastes 3:1

What is a season?

A season in the classical sense, is a natural division of the year and relates to the position of the earth to the sun.  The sun is a source of light, warmth, and energy.  A season is a continuum of time divided by the rhythmicity of four seasons.   The seasons are characterized by changes in light and dark cycles as well as temperature cycles.  These factors impact life in all its aspects.

seasons-in-the-body-0003-catalogue-signed

Cycles Around and Within Us

This image shows the  seasonal cycle that occurs within a year.  The top left image is the spring when rebirth and restoration of life occurs.  The summer (top right) follows where light and temperature are high.  The mature mellow autumn follows with orange reds and yellow colors (bottom right) .  Light starts to fade and temperatures start to fall  Autumn is a time for introspection and recognition of mortality.  The bleak and cold winter follows with a silence of impending death (bottom left).  The dancers with their own cycles are incorporated into the larger cycle, inferring the intimate integration of internal biology with the changes in the environment.  They are positioned like the hands of a clock – again incorporating the element of time.

  • Spring is a time for birth, freshness and renewal
  • Summer brings energy, blossoming, productivity and maturation and is the prime of life. Light is brightest during this period and the weather is warmest
  • Fall brings mellowness and maturation and warns of decline.  Symbolically it is a time for introspection during mid life
  • Winter is the time of aging, bleakness, decline and death.  It is characterized by darkness and cold and symbolizes quietness, contemplation, and reminds us of our  impending old age and death.

“To every thing  there is a season”  What does that mean to the structures of the body?

The changes of the seasons have parallels in the internal environment of the body down to the cells and molecules.  This implies that “everything” in biology experiences a season.

The annual cycle of the seasons is experienced physically by the body, its organs, cells, and molecules throughout the year.  They sense the cold and the warmth, and the light and dark of the external environment.

The AiA rendering is a collage of photographs with superimposed CT scan of the feet as they walk through the seasons.  The four seasons created in a sphere provide a sense of wholeness in time, while the footsteps represent a walk in  time.  The top left image of the sphere shows the magnolias of Spring, the next (going clockwise) is green forest of Summer, followed by the Fall and finally the deathly cold of winter.

Seasons of the Abdomen

This AiA rendering shows the abdominal structures reflecting the seasons.  The spring is in shades of  pink, the summer in green of the forest and the blue of the sky, the fall in oranges and red, and the winter in ice blue and white.

Seasons within Seasons and Cycles within Cycles

The cycles of the body range from nano seconds per cycle to a lifetime.  Each cycle is part of another cycle.  Each cycle consists of a beginning that evolves to full speed production, progressing to a winding down phase and  finally a phase of rest and restoration. The Krebs cycle,  heart cycle, circadian cycle, menstrual cycle, are all part of the wheel within a wheel concept and in the grand scheme of a single life it revolves around the process  of  maturation.  These same cycles occur within the cycles of evolution with improvement in processes over time.

Biochemical cycles are responsible for growth, and reproduction. The clock has to be rewound, restored to step one so that it can do its duty again. All of these have been optimized by the grand Darwinian cycle of reproduction, generation after generation, picking up fortuitous improvements over the eons.

Seasons of the Day –  Parallel Changes in the External and Internal Environments

Seasons of the Body in a 24 hour Period

This image shows the parallel of a 24 hour cycle correlating with the seasonal cycle that occurs within a year.  The top left image is the dawn when the day is born and the person is restored from sleep and starts to get ready for the the next 12 hour period.  The stress hormones start to rise as the body prepares for the work day which reflects the summer time (top right) where light and temperature are high.  After the “summer” the mellow and introspective time of the sunset arrives(bottom right)  as light and temperature start to fade.  The temporary death of sleep provided by the night follows in the bottom left .

Daybreak at sunrise is the birth of the day, and represents spring time in the body.  We wake up restored while it is a little light and a little cold outside and are refreshed and reborn after our slumber.  As the day warms up, and the light becomes stronger, we enter the summer of our 24 hour cycle.  Our cortisol levels are up to deal with the physical stresses of the day and this preparation is felt in our cells and in our psyche.  As a result of the stress we are better able to process and produce at work.  During the day we reach the height of our wakefulness and are in our productive prime.    At dusk, the autumn of the day moves in as we start to wind down and become introspective.  The light starts to go down and without the sun, the day cools down. The winter of the day – nighttime arrives. It is colder and darker, and we prepare for sleep, a transient death that helps us restore.

The internal environment of the body also senses the cycles through a hormonal cycle called the circadian cycle, which is executed via the hypothalamus.   enabling rhythmic physiological and behavioral events of the body to work in parallel with the natural rhythms of the external environment.

“Anatomy of Sleep”

The central control system for the circadian rhythms is in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus (turquiose blue butterfly shaped structure at the base of the brain)  It is responsible for the control of the circadian rhythms of the body.

Seasons of the Molecules

Circadian Rhythm and the Daily Internal Seasons of the Body

There are three main physiological events in the daily human diurnal circadian rhythm; melatonin secretioncortisol secretion, and temperature variation.

Melatonin

Melatonin is secreted by the pineal body in response to the dark.  The retina identifies light and transmits this information to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus integrates the light and darkness cycles of the environment with the pineal gland which in turn secretes melatonin in the dark.  Melatonin levels are therefore high at night and low in the day.  Melatonin is involved in sleep cycles, blood pressure regulation, and in seasonal reproduction.

Cortisol

Complex-biochemical-synthetic-function-of-the-adrenals

Seasons at the Molecular Level in the Adrenal Gland

The adrenal gland is an essential component of the circadian rhythm.  It produces cortisol which prepares the body for the stresses of the day. The artistic rendering shows background of complex biochemistry artistically incorporated into the gland. This is a featured art piece  because of the beautiful manner in which the almost invisible gland transforms the biochemistry into life giving hormones.

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland that is elemental in the control of metabolic function. It prepares the body for impending stresses.  Diurnal secretion of cortisol is part of circadian rhythm physiology.  The level is highest in the early morning and is at its lowest level at about midnight to 4 am. This high level in the morning prepares the body for the stress of the day.  Cortisol is intimately involved in the metabolism of glucose, fat and protein.

Body Temperature

Body temperature is lowest about 2 hours before waking in the morning and highest in the late afternoon and early afternoon.  During the night metabolic activity is slowed and the lowered temperature is a mechanism to conserve energy.  temperature is elemental to all biochemical processes.

Seasons of the Cells

The molecular changes give rise to cycles in the cells both in a minute to minute variations, hour to hour variations, and eventually into annual variations

Cycles in the Columnar Cell of the Colon

What would life be like if there were no seasons?

Although there is a pattern to the seasons – each one is different and as we gain perspective on the cycles.

There are cycles within cycles as time moves on – each not the same as the prior, but having many things in common.  The beginning of Spring is so full of life and we soon look forward and want to welcome the blooming of the brighter colors of summer.  And then the heat of summer comes and we look forward to the cool and mature fall – and the beautiful first deep snowfall comes and soon grows old, cold, uncomfortable and dreary – and the new cycle begins with our eyes a little changed

Eachseasons bring a lesson of life.  We need the seasons to feel the rhythm within us and around us… but each year the seasons are different, and we learn and grow with each season.

The dawn brings us newness and freshness.  The day brings us energy in full flight and productivity – the dusk brings quietness and satisfying mellowness and the night brings rest and restoration….   But each day is different, and hopefully we learn and grow with each day

“I think that to one in sympathy with nature, each season, in turn, seems the loveliest.”

Biological Rhythms

Biological Rhythms – Anatomy of the Fall- and Thanksgiving

Ashley Davidoff MD Copyright 2015

The Fall

Mixed messages.

Maturation with impending death.

Strong green,

Hints of orange, yellow, and red

Skulls and ghosts in gardens

Thanksgiving

Mortality and cycles of life

Biological Rhythms

“Early Fall”

shows a CT scan of a skull in the aging garden as the time of the Fall shows its beautiful head.  Some of the greens are still green but there is a sense of a cycle moving forward to a next phase as some leaves start to show their mature age with the coming of the fall season.

Time moves on

Yellows oranges and reds become deeper…

And more intense

And we understand George Eliot

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it,”

seasons-in-the-body-0008-catalogue-signed

“Mid Fall and Halloween”

shows a CT scan of a skull with reducing volume of bone as the Fall ages and becomes fatter.  The skull is located in the aging garden as the time progresses to the mature and mellow yellow, oranges, and reds.  There is a sense of a seasonal cycle moving forward. Middle fall is the season of Halloween when we are reminded of our mortality.

We take the dog for a walk

And everywhere it says

Death is coming

seasons-in-the-body-0011-catalogue-signed

“Autumn Reminding Us of Mortality”

shows the sentiment of the Fall as we move on in our life cycles.  Biology by its natural cycles will have a beginning, a middle and an end.  The fall is a time for contemplation and a reminder to make sweet while the sun shines.

Halloween brings the

Cutest of our society to say

“Do not to worry – there is youth in this season also”

And a pregnant Mommy stands behind smiling

Yet another inner maturation –

Cycles within cycles

seasons-in-the-body-0005-catalogue-signed

“An Autumn Beginning for this Baby”

shows an MRI of a pregnant uterus in the third trimester.  For this baby the fall is a beginning

So I come to think of the parts that make the whole

Of members of my inner society

And start with the cell

seasons-in-the-body-0010-catalogue-signed

“The Cell in the Autumn of Its Life Cycle”

shows the cell in the its own  mature and mellow colors in a background of yellows and oranges of the seasonal external cycle.  The beauty and reality of the seasons and biological rhythms are in us and all around us.

And think about the tree of my breath

As it goes through its cycles

seasons-in-the-body-0012-catalogue-signed

“Ginkgo Lung in the Fall”

is a rendering of a CT scan showing an upside airways forming the trunk and branches of a tree.  The lungs have been reshaped and colored  to reflect the shape of the ginkgo leaf in the Fall.

And about my aging bones that

Used to run in the park with no effort

seasons-in-the-body-0006-catalogue-signed

“Anatomy of a Jog  in the Fall”

shows X-rays of the calves of a runner taking a run through the park in the late fall season.  The orange colors reflect a mature part of a cycle as well as portray the element of time

and of the agility and beauty of a dancer in her prime

seasons-in-the-body-0013-web-res

“En Pointe in the Fall”

shows X-rays of the foot of a ballet dancer “en pointe” in the park in the late fall season.  The yellow colors reflect a mature part of a cycle as well as portray the element of time

I try to shake off the melancholy

Uplifted by the performance ….

Through my orange eyes

seasons-in-the-body-0009-catalogue-signed

“The Dance of Autumn”

shows an impressionistic  portrayal of contemporary dance in the Fall.  The mature and mellow colors are reflected in the yellows and oranges with the occasional splash of evergreen green.

And then we give thanks

For being  alive

And for being part of a bigger family

Emphysema – a Poem

Emphysema

Perspective of an Alveolar Cell

Ashley Davidoff MD Copyright 2015

Healthy Alveolus

When I was young my cell buddies and the tissues around us felt invincible

The ease and elasticity with which we opened and closed –

Allowing the breeze of

Beautiful oxygen ….in

And dirty carbon dioxide ….out

Was executed without effort

It really was a breeze – right through our strong bodies

No effort

Emphysema

Alveolus in Healthy Lungs

Then  one day – when the guy in charge was about 14

When his hormones started to fill his psyche

He went to a party

Lots of little talk

And “cool” this and “cool” that

And “come on … try this” and “try that”

And in his psyche I read

(though he did not consciously know it )

“I want to fit in”…  “I want to look cool”

And suddenly while waiting for my beautiful blue oxygen

A wave of  black and gray stink air imploded in my face

“Yech” I shouted

And that was the beginning of the end

Day after day

Smelly smoke continued to come down the pipeline

.. and it took control of him

Even though he knew better

Early morning when we woke up

After breakfast with a cup of coffee

Same after lunch and after dinner

And just before sweet repose

He blew this black-gray muck in our faces

And we had no power

Over the years

We lost our elasticity

And we lost hope

Then and Now

He hid his habit from his children and grandchildren who said “yech”

His breathing had a deathly rattle

He coughed green and yellow stinky mucus

His breath stank

His clothes stank

He aged before his time

His skin wrinkled

His voice was coarse

And his arteries became rigid and narrowed pipes

And our small airways were stretched and stretched

Till we looked like big black holes in a ghost town

Of rotting and stale air that could not move…

What We Were… and Now …Big Black Holes

So when we look back

And try to learn, ……

It all started when he wanted to fit in

A human weakness we need to address at a time

When

The psyche of our children

…. and many adults

Have a need to pursue superficiality to

Look cool and fit in
